On the second day of the domestic manufacturing exhibition, a panel on “the contribution of knowledge-based companies to developing domestic manufacturing technologies” was held before an audience of enthusiasts and practitioners of the industry, with presentations by Dr Shahin Hosseini, Jam Petrochemical's research and technology manager, and two managers from MAPNA and the Standard Research Institute.

According to the public and international relations office, Dr

Shahin Hosseini, at this scientific meeting, set out the key part played by knowledge-based companies in developing domestic technologies and also presented a set of measures for reducing the risk of technological projects:

1- Breaking large projects into smaller ones in financial and technical terms, a method Jam Petrochemical has successfully applied in its own projects with striking results.

  1. Designing and building suitable and sufficient pilot plants in the country to speed up technology development.
  1. Attention to sustainability at every stage of technology and project development.
  1. Strengthening research and development (R&D) and giving weight to people and to training capable specialists.
  1. The creation by governing bodies of platforms connecting knowledge-based companies with large industries.
  1. Defining innovation indicators (KPIs) for the country's managers and allocating a section of companies' audited financial statements to the achievements of the knowledge-based economy, in order to shape attitudes and promote a culture of innovation and organisational productivity.
  1. Insisting that one of the principal indicators for knowledge-based companies should be patents registered, not merely papers published.
  1. Forming consortia of universities, industry and knowledge-based companies to solve the industry's technological problems; the design, manufacture and localisation of catalyst at Jam Petrochemical, carried out by reviewing and examining many international patents and registering several national patents, is a real instance of this.

Saying that these measures smooth the path to sustainable technology development and greater competitiveness for the country's industry, he added: besides training and the transfer of experience, panels of this kind also provide a space for specialist networking and for the beginning of cooperation between companies, universities and students.

The panel was attended by researchers, industry specialists, people working in knowledge-based companies and students, and those taking part judged it a starting point for strengthening relations between industry, universities and knowledge-based companies.
