Butadiene
Butadiene Unit
Jam Petrochemical's butadiene unit, built under licence from BASF of Germany with basic engineering by LURGI and detailed engineering by Namvaran, has a production capacity of 115,000 tons per year. In output, purity and product quality it is an exemplary unit nationally and one of Jam Petrochemical's most valuable.
Areas of the butadiene unit
- Plant
- Storage Facilities
- Separation
Butadiene cannot be separated from C4 cuts by ordinary, simple distillation, because most C4-cut compounds have boiling points close to one another and azeotropes may form.
BASF exploits the greater volatility of the compounds in a selective solvent. This selective solvent is NMP (N-methyl pyrrolidone), which contains about 8.3 percent water by weight and is used in the extractive distillation stages.
Crude butadiene is taken off by extractive distillation and purified in the distillation stage.
